More than a decade ago, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) started funding clinical trials in California. Now, with more than 100 clinical trials directly funded by CIRM and more than double that number running at CIRM-supported facilities throughout the state, the agency is making it easy for anyone to find California cell and gene therapy trials.
A new dashboard on the CIRM website lists all active trials in a network of nine CIRM-funded clinics throughout the state. Known as the CIRM Alpha Clinic network, these clinics are at many of the top medical centers in California. Many of these trials will also be available through the Clinical Care Centers of Excellence (CCCE), which bring cell and gene therapies to parts of California outside of major metropolitan centers.

Focus on access
CIRM developed the Clinical Care Centers of Excellence with the understanding that a person’s zip code shouldn’t determine whether they can access clinical trials. There are currently three CCCEs – in the Inland Empire, Fresno, and southern California – and the agency is currently taking applications to support a fourth CCCE in northern California.
But clinical trials throughout the state are only valuable if people can find them. That’s why CIRM developed the new dashboard. People can search by disease of interest, location, or trial status. The results direct people to detailed information about the trial at ClinicalTrials.gov – a federal database of all FDA-approved trials.
The detailed information includes trial locations and contact information, including locations outside California. In addition, the information provided includes criteria for who is being recruited for the trial, study design, links to publications if there are any, and other information to help potential Californians decide whether a trial is a possible option for themselves or their loved ones.
