How a childhood condition sparked a career in regenerative medicine

As a child, Dongwei Sun received a medical treatment that left his lower limbs weak and sometimes numb.

“This experience inspired my dedication to develop biomedical technologies to prevent, treat, and potentially cure debilitating conditions,” Dongwei said. “Using stem cells to regrow nerves or repair damaged tissue feels like science fiction becoming real, and I want to help make that happen.”

Dongwei joined the CIRM Scholars Program. The Scholars program supports doctoral students and recent graduates pursuing regenerative medicine projects. He earned his PhD in materials science and bioengineering from the University of California, Riverside. Dongwei participated in the CIRM Scholars Program there in 2024. He is now a scientist at Cedars‑Sinai Medical Center, specializing in regenerative medicine and stem cell research with a focus on cardiovascular diseases.

Shaping a Vision for the Future of Medicine

The Scholars Program’s mentorship and educational activities helped guide Dongwei toward a career in stem cell science.

“The skills, connections, and experiences I gained through the CIRM Scholars Program laid the groundwork,” he said. “They strengthened my ambition to lead innovative research in regenerative medicine.”

He also learned how to communicate his research effectively so he could connect with policymakers and take part in public outreach. Both are essential for explaining why sustained funding for stem cell research matters.

“Cutting‑edge stem cell science relies on continuous innovation, rigorous testing, and careful translation from the lab to the clinic,” he said. “Consistent support ensures that promising discoveries reach patients without delay.”

Allowing scientists to pursue high‑risk, high‑reward ideas offers the hope of transforming medicine, Dongwei said.

“It also helps maintain regulatory oversight, ethical standards, and equitable patient access to these therapies,” he said.
