The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) announces Jonathan “JT” Thomas, PhD, JD, as its new President and CEO. JT brings broad experience and a strong commitment to CIRM’s mission. He previously served 12 years as Chair of the Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (ICOC) and most recently as Interim CEO.
“JT understands our mission and the vision needed to guide CIRM’s next phase of growth,” said Vito Imbasciani, PhD, MD, Chair of the CIRM Board. “We have full confidence in JT as he leads our efforts to deliver cell and gene therapies to patients who need them.”
The next chapter
The ICOC began its CEO search in November 2023 after Dr. Maria Millan departed. JT has served as Interim CEO since January 2024 and now steps into the role, providing continuity and new momentum.
“It is a privilege to serve as CIRM’s CEO and President,” said Dr. Thomas. “Our team has built a strong plan to use remaining Prop 14 funds for maximum patient benefit. As we near our 20th anniversary, I look forward to accelerating progress and advancing transformative therapies.”
In 2011, JT became Board Chair and led CIRM through major growth and achievement. Under his leadership, CIRM awarded $2.5 billion to advance stem cell research for patients with unmet needs. He expanded industry partnerships, improved award processes, and helped secure $5.5 billion in new funding through Proposition 14.
Before joining CIRM, JT co-founded Saybrook Capital and led early financing for Advanced Cell Technology. He clerked for White House Counsel Lloyd Cutler and Judge George Mackinnon of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. JT holds degrees from Yale University and Oxford University.
Maria Gonzalez Bonneville, Vice Chair of the CIRM Board, welcomed JT’s appointment. She said he will champion patients and support programs that expand access to and affordability of cell and gene therapies in California.
As JT steps into this role, CIRM remains committed to accelerating world-class science and delivering regenerative medicine treatments fairly to California and beyond. We look forward to this new chapter under JT’s guidance.
